    OBLIGATION VS. APPRECIATION

    Wrestling Mindset Training

    The Mindset Difference

An obligation mindset sounds like "I have to practice," "I have to condition," or "I have to manage my weight." It makes the things you do feel like a chore or a burden. When you operate from an obligation mindset, your energy drops, your body gets tense, and you wrestle not to make mistakes. You go through the motions because you feel forced.

An appreciation mindset shifts those thoughts into "I get to practice," "I get to compete," and "I get to grow." It reminds you that the opportunity to step on the mat is a privilege, not a punishment.

The On-Mat Impact: When you shift to "I get to," you wrestle with freedom, passion, and aggression. You stop worrying about failure and start hunting for opportunities to score. This simple shift in perspective completely changes how you show up for your teammates and how you perform under pressure.

Step 1: Identify Your 'I Have To' Statements

List five wrestling, school, or life responsibilities you often view as obligations.

    Step 2: Change The Conversation

Rewrite each statement from "I have to" into "I get to."

Example: "I have to go to practice" becomes "I get to go to practice because every rep helps me become the wrestler I want to be."

    Step 3: Find The Gratitude

Write why you are thankful for each opportunity.

    Step 1: 'I Have To...'
    Step 2: 'I Get To...'
    Step 3: Why I'm Thankful
Example: "I have to do extra conditioning today."Example: "I get to build the gas tank I need for the 3rd period."Example: "I am thankful my body is healthy enough to push to the limit."

    Coach's Challenge

"This week, pay attention to your thoughts. Every time you catch yourself saying 'I have to,' stop and replace it with 'I get to.'"

Gratitude fuels effort. Effort fuels growth. Growth fuels confidence.

"Coach Dee has had a powerful impact on our son, Wes, in a way that goes far beyond sports. When Wes first began working with him, he struggled with confidence and often doubted himself when things became difficult. Coach Dee helped him shift his mindset from fear of failure to understanding that growth comes through effort, consistency, and perseverance. Through wrestling, Wes learned how to handle adversity, stay disciplined, and keep showing up even when things didn't go his way. Coach Dee consistently reinforced the importance of delayed gratification and trusting the process, even when results weren't immediate. That guidance helped Wes grow into a more resilient and focused athlete, eventually achieving milestones he once didn't think were possible. What makes Coach Dee especially impactful is that his influence extends beyond a single sport. The mindset he teaches has carried over into baseball and into everyday life. Wes now approaches challenges with more confidence, better focus, and a willingness to learn from mistakes instead of being discouraged by them. Coach Dee doesn't just train athletes..he builds character, confidence, and mental toughness. He holds kids accountable while also believing in their potential, and he has a gift for helping them see what they are capable of before they can see it themselves. We are truly grateful for Coach Dee's leadership and the lasting impact he has had on Wes. His coaching has shaped not just an athlete, but a stronger, more confident Wes."
