Many volleyball players think they have a confidence problem when they compete. More often, they have a focus problem.
In practice, players focus on execution — platform angle, approach footwork, serve mechanics, court reads, and communication. They stay focused on what they trained to do.
During matches, many players shift their focus to evaluating — the serving error last rotation, the hitting error that gave up the set, what teammates or coaches are thinking.
When players focus on evaluating, they become hesitant, mechanical, and disconnected from the game.
The best competitors stay focused on the next touch. Every pass, set, hit, serve, and dig is a fresh opportunity. They ask:
"How can I win the next touch?"
This worksheet helps you evaluate your focus, identify distractions, and train your mind to stay locked in on execution — one touch at a time.
Remember: Stop evaluating. Start executing. Focus on winning the next touch.
Rate each statement from 1 (Not at all) to 5 (Absolutely).
Check all that apply. Be honest.
Think of a moment in the match when things went wrong — a serving error, a hitting error, a bad pass. Answer honestly.
Identify three touches or rallies where you could have executed better. Be specific.
Opportunity #1
Opportunity #2
Opportunity #3
Define your strengths. Know them. Trust them. Execute them every rally.
When I Get Distracted, My Focus Phrase Will Be:
“Focus on winning the next touch.”
Coach's Challenge
The score tells you what has already happened.
Champions focus on what happens next.
Don't carry the serving error, the hitting mistake, or the bad pass into the next rally. Get your platform up. Get your feet moving. Get focused on the next touch.
Volleyball is a game of momentum. You control the momentum when you control your mind.
One rally.
One touch.
One opportunity at a time.
Focus on winning the next touch.
