    The Controllables Worksheet

    Next Leavell Inspiration Logo

    Why This Worksheet Matters

Wrestlers often lose matches before they even step on the mat because they are focused on things they cannot control (rankings, the referee, their opponent's record). This worksheet forces them to shift their focus back to their own effort, attitude, and preparation—the only things that actually dictate performance.

    When To Use It

    Pre-Tournament Prep

Hand this out on the bus ride or the night before a big tournament to help athletes lock in their focus.

    After a Tough Loss

Use it to help a wrestler reset mentally after losing a match they feel they should have won.

    Slump Breaker

If a wrestler is wrestling tight or afraid to make mistakes, use this to simplify their mindset.

    1-on-1 Meetings

Have them complete it before a 1-on-1 meeting to guide your conversation.

How To Introduce It To Your Team

"Guys, we spend hours drilling takedowns and escapes, but how much time do we spend training our focus? Today, we are going to identify exactly what is holding you back mentally. If you are worried about the referee, the crowd, or losing, you are giving away your power. This worksheet is going to help you take that power back by focusing only on what you can control."

    Coach's Notes

"Coach Dee has had a powerful impact on our son, Wes, in a way that goes far beyond sports. When Wes first began working with him, he struggled with confidence and often doubted himself when things became difficult. Coach Dee helped him shift his mindset from fear of failure to understanding that growth comes through effort, consistency, and perseverance. Through wrestling, Wes learned how to handle adversity, stay disciplined, and keep showing up even when things didn't go his way. Coach Dee consistently reinforced the importance of delayed gratification and trusting the process, even when results weren't immediate. That guidance helped Wes grow into a more resilient and focused athlete, eventually achieving milestones he once didn't think were possible. What makes Coach Dee especially impactful is that his influence extends beyond a single sport. The mindset he teaches has carried over into baseball and into everyday life. Wes now approaches challenges with more confidence, better focus, and a willingness to learn from mistakes instead of being discouraged by them. Coach Dee doesn't just train athletes..he builds character, confidence, and mental toughness. He holds kids accountable while also believing in their potential, and he has a gift for helping them see what they are capable of before they can see it themselves. We are truly grateful for Coach Dee's leadership and the lasting impact he has had on Wes. His coaching has shaped not just an athlete, but a stronger, more confident Wes."
