    A Mental Toughness Worksheet
    For Softball Players

    VOL. 02

"You can't control every pitch, hop, or call...
but you can always control your response."

    Emotions Aren't The Problem

    01

The feeling is not the problem. Frustration, anger, disappointment, nerves, and embarrassment can all show up in softball. Those emotions are valid. The response is where leadership shows up.

    The Reality of the Diamond

    • Even the best hitters fail 7 out of 10 times.
    • Errors happen to the best fielders in the game.
    • Getting pulled or riding the bench is part of the game.
    • Bad calls from umpires happen to every team.

Elite softball players don't suppress their emotions — they process them quickly and shift focus back to execution. Confidence is rebuilt through your response, not by avoiding failure.

    The Dugout Effect

"Your response affects your confidence, your body language, and your entire dugout."

    Common Pressure Situations

    Strikeout with runners on base
    Error that leads to runs
    Getting pulled from the circle
Called out on a close play
    Giving up a grand slam
    0-for-4 at the plate

    Spot the Difference

    02

For each game moment, name the emotion, identify the response that would hurt you or the team, then write a better response.

    The Ripple Effect

Pick one invalid response you have seen or experienced. Then trace what it affected.

    What happened?
    What emotion were you feeling?
    What was your response?
How did that response affect your next at-bat or next inning in the circle?
How did it affect the dugout, teammates, or team energy?

    Control The Controllables

    03

Elite players don't waste energy on things they can't control. They focus 100% of their energy on what they can.

    In My Control

    My approach and preparation
My effort every at-bat and every pitch
My attitude and energy in the dugout
    My response to failure
My body language on the field
    How I support my teammates

    Out Of My Control

    The umpire's strike zone
    The weather and field conditions
The coach's lineup or batting order
The other pitcher's stuff that day
    Bad hops and bad bounces
What scouts, fans, or parents say

    Self-Reflection

What is one "uncontrollable" you need to stop wasting energy on?

What is one "controllable" you need to focus on more today?

    Flip the Script

    04

A GREAT teammate can feel the emotion without letting the emotion run the game.

    G

    Grateful

I still get to compete. I can learn from this and come back stronger.

    R

    Resilient

I can bounce back from this at-bat, this inning, this game.

    E

    Encouraging

I can bring energy to the dugout instead of draining it.

    A

    Accountable

I can own my response without blaming the umpire or conditions.

    T

    Tough

I can do what helps the team, even when I'm frustrated.

What would a GREAT teammate do in this moment?

What is one response you will commit to using next time?

Write your "Win The Next Pitch" statement.

Example: "Breathe. Reset. Next pitch." or "Flush it. Win the next pitch."

    Game Plan Commitment

    When I feel...
    I will respond by...

Reminder: You may not control every pitch, call, hop, or lineup decision. But you always control your response — and your response can lift the whole team.

    Coach-Led Discussion Guide

    05

    Dugout Culture Standard

"One bad response can spread through a dugout faster than one bad inning."

    Discussion Questions

    • Question 1

Why is it harder to control our response when we feel we've let the team down?

    • Question 2

How does a player's body language after a mistake affect the rest of the dugout's energy?

    • Question 3

What is the difference between a "reaction" and a "response" in a pressure situation?

    Coaching Points

"Validate the emotion first. It's okay to be frustrated. But we don't stay there. We reset and compete."

"Reward the response, not just the result. When a player resets well after a strikeout, call it out."

"Model the behavior. If the coach loses their head at an umpire, the players will lose their head at their mistakes."

"Since working with Coach Dee, we've seen a huge change in her confidence and mindset. She has learned to focus on what she can control, trust her preparation, and let go of the things she can't."
