Baseball Mindset Training
An obligation mindset sounds like "I have to practice," "I have to condition," or "I have to study." It makes the things you do feel like a chore or a burden. When you operate from an obligation mindset, your energy drops, your body gets tense, and you play not to make mistakes. You go through the motions because you feel forced.
An appreciation mindset shifts those thoughts into "I get to practice," "I get to compete," and "I get to grow." It reminds you that the opportunity to play this game is a privilege, not a punishment.
The On-Field Impact: When you shift to "I get to," you play with freedom, passion, and aggression. You stop worrying about failure and start hunting for opportunities to compete. This simple shift in perspective completely changes how you show up for your teammates and how you perform under pressure.
List five baseball, school, or life responsibilities you often view as obligations.
Rewrite each statement from "I have to" into "I get to."
Example: "I have to go to practice" becomes "I get to go to practice because every rep helps me become the player I want to be."
Write why you are thankful for each opportunity.
Step 1: 'I Have To...' | Step 2: 'I Get To...' | Step 3: Why I'm Thankful |
|---|---|---|
| Example: "I have to go to practice today." | Example: "I get to go to practice and take extra reps." | Example: "I am thankful my body is healthy enough to play the sport I love." |
"This week, pay attention to your thoughts. Every time you catch yourself saying 'I have to,' stop and replace it with 'I get to.'"
Gratitude fuels effort. Effort fuels growth. Growth fuels confidence.
"Coach Dee has been a game-changer for our 11U Rockhounds! His ability to connect with and inspire these boys have helped build their skills, confidence, and love for the game. He pushes them to be their best both on and off the field in a way that doesn’t demand perfection. He shifts the focus from failures to celebrating all the small wins! We highly recommend Coach Dee to any player looking to take their game to the next level!"
