Many baseball players think they have a confidence problem when they compete. More often, they have a focus problem.
In practice, players focus on execution. They think about their stance, load, swing path, pitch recognition, and defensive positioning. They stay focused on doing what they trained to do.
During games, many players shift their focus to evaluating. They start thinking about their batting average, whether they struck out last at-bat, what the coach is thinking, or what might happen if they make an error.
When players focus on evaluating, they often become hesitant, mechanical, and reactive.
The best competitors stay focused on the next pitch. They don't get stuck on the last strikeout, the current score, or what happened two innings ago. They simply ask themselves:
"How can I win the next pitch?"
This worksheet is designed to help you evaluate your focus, identify distractions, recognize execution opportunities, and train your mind to stay locked in on the next pitch.
Remember: Stop evaluating. Start executing. Focus on winning the next pitch.
Rate each statement from 1 (Not at all) to 5 (Absolutely).
Check all that apply. Be honest — this is for your growth.
Think of a moment in the game when things didn't go your way — a strikeout, an error, a bad at-bat. Answer honestly.
Identify three situations where you could have executed better at the plate, on the mound, or in the field. Be specific.
Opportunity #1
Opportunity #2
Opportunity #3
Define your approach. Know it. Trust it. Execute it.
When I Get Distracted, My Focus Phrase Will Be:
“Focus on winning the next pitch.”
Coach's Challenge
The scoreboard tells you what has already happened.
Champions focus on what happens next.
Don't waste energy thinking about the last strikeout, the error two innings ago, or your batting average. Stay present. Stay aggressive. Stay focused on competing on the next pitch.
Whether you're in the box, on the mound, or in the field — the only pitch that matters is the one happening right now.
One pitch.
One at-bat.
One play at a time.
Focus on winning the next pitch.
"Coach Dee has been a game-changer for our 11U Rockhounds! His ability to connect with and inspire these boys have helped build their skills, confidence, and love for the game. He pushes them to be their best both on and off the field in a way that doesn’t demand perfection. He shifts the focus from failures to celebrating all the small wins! We highly recommend Coach Dee to any player looking to take their game to the next level!"
